Superheroes Birthday Party

Our family met a super friendly cartoonist from Cruelty Free Cartoons last September. He drew the children on a touch screen monitor which was then printed out instantly on his laser printer. The entire process was brilliant.

The children and I thought to use these special caricatures as the theme for their upcoming joint birthday party. Now what's a superhero party without a cape? Luckily I found a fantastic merchant on Etsy Sew Plain Jane. I ordered 10 red capes for our guests, 1 blue cape for my son and 2 pink capes - 1 adult size and 1 child size (for my daughter and myself!). We gave the capes as our party favors along with some leftover Oreo cookies from the cake. The children definitely looked the part at the party don't you agree?

We celebrated at 4Cats Arts Studio and each child created a polymer clay superhero which was then placed on a canvas board with a painted acrylic background.

Have a look at their works of art!

And finally, the piece de resistance, the cake. The bottom tier was a Chocolate Oreo cake and the top two tiers were Golden Oreo cakes.

The inspiration for the cake design came from Elisa Strauss of Confetti Cakes. The base is made with blue fondant and the buildings were made with grey fondant. I surrounded the cake with fondant candle holders on either side for each of my children. The superhero figures were piped on wax paper with Wilton candy melts. The template was taken from the original caricatures. I then accented the cake with Duff's decorative cake wires (whom I will feature on a future blog).

Art from start to finish and this mum was inspired by... Superheroes!
